Meet the Maker

Hello there, I'm Tess. Iā€™m an Industrial Engineer turned HR Professional turned Maker. I enjoy writing, crafting, and discovering food haunts.

I am a Filipino immigrant living in Melbourne, Australia. I did the big move with my husband and two kids in 2008. I have spent the past years raising my little ones and helped build a home for the family. I tried making alone times fun for me. So I did crafts, DIYs, sewing and baking, just to keep myself busy. I have always been the creative type and have this passion for color and design. So I 'drowned' myself with lovely papers, patterns and fabrics, not to mention sweets.

Today, the kids have all grown, and I realized I have more time to pursue my dream project. In 2020, I started a small handmade gift shop on Etsy and called it WHAT TESS MAKES. It was a tough year for many, but being in lockdown, I got inspired to do more. Aside from being a maker, I began writing a blog about my creative life (being active again in social media), and named it TITA TESS OF MELBOURNE (but updated to What Tess Makes in 2022). The Filipino word "Tita" means "Aunt" in English. (You can also use it as a sign of respect to adults, even to non-blood relations.) The blog is an ode to my children who are growing up fast in their adoptive country. When things become overwhelming, I just wish they find that there is a safe space for them to linger. (And it applies to you too!) The blog will not only feature my work but also show support for other makers in the creative community.

I am excited to share my design journey in this way. Expect lots of color, great artisan finds, new discoveries and lovely stories that come after.

Sending a little love your way,

Tess xx

My work is a reflection of my life, experiences, and heritage.
