WTM Craftivity 2 : Fabric-Covered Journal

Upcycle your regular notebook

Excited to share here a 'trade secret'. 😁

I have sold out these journals. Now, I am sharing how I made them. You need a normal notebook of your choice. Best fabric to use is canvas, or thick ones. I chose denim for this dad gift. Don't forget the final touch of his gold initials.

What you will need:

  • A5 notebook (13.5cm W x 21cm L x 0.75cm D

  • Soft denim fabric, cut in rectangle 29.5cm L x 23cm W

  • Iron-on Medium Interface, cut in rectangle 27.5cm L x 21cm W

  • Pale cream cardstock, at least 160 gsm, cut in rectangle 13cm W x 20.5cm L

  • PVA glue

  • Double sided tape

  • Foam brush

  • Rubber roller

  • Home iron

  • Optional: Heat Transfer Vinyl for the initials

Method:

  1. Iron your fabric well. Cut the fabric into 29.5cm L x 23cm W. Then, iron interface (rectangle 27.5cm L x 21cm W) at the wrong side of the fabric.

  2. Cut the middle section of the fabric ensemble to fit the spine of the A5 journal. Fold the fabric cut offs and smoothen to align the edges.

  3. Apply PVA glue, with the use of the foam brush, at the spine of the notebook. Settle the fabric ensemble firmly.

  4. Apply PVA glue on one of the covers of the notebook. Then, spread the fabric on top, make sure to stretch tightly. Use a rubber roller to smoothen.

  5. Put double-sided tape on the inside of the cover. Fold the excess fabric and adhere to tape. Repeat to all sides.

  6. Repeat Step 4 and 5 for the back cover of the notebook.

  7. At this stage, let it dry. Run a warm iron (without steam) to help dry and smoothen the fabric.

  8. Once dry, adhere the cardstock with double-sided tape to the insides of the cover to shield the excess fabric parts.

  9. Optional step: Set your text at 1.5cm high and cut your HTV as directed by your cutting machine. Apply the vinyl on the top cover of the notebook. (You can choose where to put it. I chose the bottom right corner.) Iron HTV at the spot you prefer and let it cool.
